"Take a Rake" Workshop

6/23 9:00 am - 6/23 11:00 am

Saturday, June 23
9 - 11 a.m.
Speculator Pavilion, Route 30

The Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District is hosting a "Take a Rake" Workshop Saturday June 23 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Speculator Pavilion, Route 30.  Learn how to survey lakes for aquatic invasive plants with a specialized sampling rake, and take one home!

The workshop will be jam packed with a presentation, time to view samples of submerged and floating invasive plants, and a rake toss demonstration. Rake tosses are an effective and easy way to survey lakes for unwanted invaders. Early detection results in rapid response and an opportunity to manage or eliminate invasive species that decrease property value, make fishing and boating unenjoyable, and harm ecosystems.

The District has partnered with the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program to offer this great event to our lake association members, shoreline property owners, and concerned conservationists.  APIPP’s Erin Vennie-Vollrath will have samples of aquatic invasive plants on hand like Eurasian watermilfoil, water chestnut, and hydrilla to show key identification features. We will then head to the dock on Lake Pleasant where you can practice your rake toss technique and learn how to survey your lakes for alien plants.  Additional information is provided on this linked poster.
